Christian Aid Training Day: Tax, Global Poverty and the City
Christian Aid will be hosting a training day to equip those who have been campaigning for tax justice in the last year and those who want to start campaigning in 2010. It will take place on Saturday 20th March at Christian Aid, 35 Lower Marsh, Waterloo, London, SE1 7RL.
The keynote address will be given by William Morris, curate at St Martin's in the Fields, London and tax lawyer at a major multinational company in the City. His address will give personal and theological reflections on how he reconciles his two roles. He will also highlight his views on how the City perceive the concept of tax justice and will challenge activists regarding what campaigning is effective within the City.
The day will focus on:
• The importance of tax in tackling global poverty and corruption • The impact our campaigning is having on political parties and the City • How the tax campaign will develop in 2010 and ways to be involved
In 2009 tax became a prominent issue on the international political agenda as world leaders began to realise the damage tax dodging was doing to their economies. With the upcoming general election and further G20 talks planned, this is the year we need to turn political rhetoric into action on tax dodging.
US $160 Bn has been lost through tax dodging, and we are calling for this money to be recovered and returned to the world’s poorest countries. This will help the 1.6 billion people still living in extreme poverty. In the light of all this Christian Aid wants to equip many activists to take up this cause and lobby the government.
The day begins at 10am for 10.30 and will end by 16.30. It is free to attend and lunch will be provided. To find out more information and to book please contact Campaigns on 020 7523 2264 or email campaigns@christian-aid.org
